“Three… two… one… go!” shouted Larissa. Instantly, twenty to thirty kids went tearing off and round the muddy football pitch on Leamington’s Newbold Comyn. This was a typical race (there were some Mums and Dads but they really struggled to keep up with the kids!) in the latest of Kids Run Free’s monthly Saturday running events.
The weather was chilly but sunny when the event started at 09:00am and Larissa and Steve started things off by getting everyone to do warm up exercises. (Any mums and dads not pulling their weight were justly named and shamed.) The races were done on a new course layout that Kids Run Free is starting to use in Leamington and Coventry. Volunteers and Mums and Dads really appreciated the new course layout.
We were most pleased when, on Saturday 1st March, we had an extra special volunteer. This was Richard Whitehead. As a double leg amputee, he ran his first marathon in 2004, since then he has gone from strength to strength, winning Gold in the 2012 London Paralympic Games. Richard was really keen to get involved, even starting some of the races. Here he is getting stuck in with the other volunteers.
Here he is with Larissa and Steve.
Good news for Coventry KRF, we had a new team of volunteers who worked really hard to help the 40 children who ran there. We are currently also looking for an extra Leamington volunteer. If you are interested, email firstname.lastname@example.org
